		<abstract>The North of Minas Gerais has similar physical conditions to the Northeast states of Brazil, and as such, suffers from droughts and negative impacts caused by it, whether environmental, economic or social. Thus, the acquisition of data about such extreme events is very important for planning strategies of living, in order to mitigate the impacts. Remote Sensing has presented methodologies for studies of extreme events. From the synoptic view provided by satellite images, it is possible an understanding of the dynamics of land cover, collecting relevant information for assessing the occurrence and intensity of the drought. Among the methodologies currently available, it is the vegetation condition index (VCI), which aims at monitoring the drought, with the assumption that the vegetation vigor is affected by climate change. The objective of this work is the mapping of drought in North Minas Gerais, using the index of vegetation condition over the year 2013. The results show a good relationship between VCI and rainfall data. The VCI was successful in indicating the onset of drought, intensification and end event and pointed to the microregion of Janaúba as the most frequently affected by drought from 2013.</abstract>
